American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day is Saturday, June 3rd. This is a nationwide experience shared through thousands of events.  Whether it’s on foot, on bike, on horse, or on boat – it encourages new and experienced hikers to hit the great outdoors and find their own adventure!

It is a great opportunity to meet new people in your area or experience some of your local trails whether you’re young or old.

Founded in 1976, the American Hiking Society has been working for many years with Congress and federal agencies to shape public policy and legislation affecting hiking. Their mission statement reads:

As the national voice for America’s hikers, American Hiking Society promotes and protects foot trails, their surrounding natural areas, and the hiking experience.

According to the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day is the “the only nationally coordinated event designed to unite all muscle-powered trail activities with the goal of connecting more people to trails”. The goal is attract new trail users to connect to old trail enthusiasts. There are so many local and national clubs and organizations whose goals are to promote preservation and conservation in their areas. With National Trails day on the first Saturday of every June, the American Hiking Society strives to bring people together for this large cause. There are over 200,000 miles of trail within the United States, therefore protecting and maintaining these trails require the collaboration of many.

Most National Trails Day events are free, depending on what events your local community is hosting – the exception typically being park entrance fees. Events include anything from hiking, bike riding, birding, photography, geocaching, running, planting, and other activities for children and adults.

If you’re unable to participate in any of your local National Trails Day events, consider hosting your own next year or donating to the American Hiking Society. Your tax-deductible gift will help build and protect trails in the United States.

The American Hiking Society also partners with notable hikers, community leaders, and activists to inspire others to pursue the great outdoors. You can also find hikes near you, find a volunteer vacation, and inquire about jobs and internships offered by the American Hiking Society.
